Breast cancer
Expert care at every stage
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, with approximately 1 in 7 women diagnosed in their lifetime. Early detection and individualised treatment have led to significantly improved survival rates. We offer care across all stages of the disease, from early, screen-detected cancers to complex or recurrent presentations.
Yes, there are several types of breast cancer, each with their own characteristics and treatment approaches. The main types include:
- Invasive breast cancer – Cancer cells that have spread beyond the milk ducts into surrounding breast tissue.
- Invasive lobular breast cancer – Begins in the milk-producing lobules and moves into surrounding tissue.
- Triple negative breast cancer – While aggressive, this is a rarer form of cancer which can be harder to treat with standard therapies.
- Inflammatory breast cancer – A rare type that affects the skin and lymph vessels, causing swelling and redness.
- Angiosarcoma of the breast – Very rare and fast-growing, this cancer originates in the blood vessels or lymphatic vessels.
- Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) – Cancer that remains contained within the milk ducts and hasn’t spread into surrounding tissue.
- Male breast cancer – Uncommon, but possible, particularly in older men.
Knowing what to look for helps you spot potential problems early. Symptoms can vary, but common signs include:
- A lump in the breast or under your arm
- A change in the size or shape of a breast
- Skin changes (including dimpling, puckering, or redness)
- Nipple discharge
- Persistent pain in the breast or armpit
If you notice any of these changes, speak to a doctor — even if they seem minor.
