Capsular contracture is one of the more common issues that can happen after breast implant surgery. It occurs when the body forms a layer of scar tissue (called a capsule) around the implant, which is perfectly natural. In some cases, however, this scar tissue tightens or hardens too much, causing the breast to feel firm or look misshapen. It can also lead to discomfort or even pain.

The exact cause isn’t always clear, but several factors might contribute. These include minor infections, bleeding around the implant (known as haematoma), or a small rupture in the implant shell. Lifestyle factors such as smoking can increase the risk, and some types of implants may be more likely to cause contracture than others.

Treatment depends on how severe the contracture is. In mild cases, we may recommend medication and monitoring. If it’s more uncomfortable or causing visible changes, we might suggest a procedure to release the scar tissue (called a capsulotomy), or in some cases, remove and replace the implant altogether. Your consultant will talk you through all the options and help you decide what feels right for you.

While there is a chance it could happen again, modern surgical techniques, improved implant materials, and good aftercare have all helped to lower the risk. We’ll make sure you’re supported with expert guidance and tailored follow-up care every step of the way.
