Specialist guidance and treatment

Gynaecomastia is a condition in which the breast tissue in males becomes larger than usual. It’s usually harmless and happens because of hormone changes, certain medications, or sometimes other health conditions. While it’s generally not serious, it can be uncomfortable or distressing for some men.

It can happen for a number of reasons, including hormone changes during puberty, side effects from some medicines (such as heart or anti-anxiety drugs), or health issues such as liver or hormone-related problems. At your consultation, we’ll do a thorough check-up to make sure there are no other issues that could be affecting your condition.

If it doesn’t go away on its own, or if it causes discomfort or affects how you feel about your appearance, there are treatments available, including surgery. This can involve liposuction or removing the gland tissue to help restore a more typical chest shape.

It’s very rare, but male breast cancer can sometimes look similar. If necessary, we’ll carry out imaging tests and take a small sample (biopsy) to give you either peace of mind or a fast track to the treatment you need. Either way, you’ll be in good hands.
