Expert care for fast relief

Mastitis is a condition in which the breast tissue becomes inflamed. It occurs most often when mothers are breastfeeding.

It’s usually caused by a milk duct becoming blocked or infected, leading to pain, swelling, redness, and sometimes fever or flu-like symptoms. While it can be uncomfortable and worrying, mastitis is quite common and usually responds well to treatment. It’s important to get help early to ease symptoms and prevent complications.

We usually treat mastitis with antibiotics and encourage you to keep breastfeeding or pumping to help clear the infection. If a pocket of pus (called an abscess) forms, it might need to be drained.

Yes, mastitis can also occur in people who aren’t breastfeeding. In those cases, we take a closer look to rule out other causes, including a serious – though thankfully rare – condition called inflammatory breast cancer.

If you notice breast pain, redness, swelling, or feel unwell with a fever, then you should seek the advice of a medical professional. As well as helping you feel better faster, early treatment can also prevent further complications.
