Expert treatment, compassionate care

A mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts, most often used to treat breast cancer, or to reduce the risk of developing it in the future. Having a mastectomy is a big decision. For many, this procedure is part of a broader journey toward recovery or prevention, and we’re here to guide you through it with expert advice and ongoing support.

We might suggest a mastectomy as a course of treatment if you’ve been diagnosed with a certain type of breast cancer, if you carry a high-risk gene (like BRCA), or when other treatments such as breast-conserving surgery aren’t suitable. In addition to this, some patients choose to have a mastectomy as a proactive, risk-reducing step.

The surgery is carried out under a general anaesthetic and involves removing the breast tissue. Depending on your individual circumstances, and your preferences, we might be able to offer breast reconstruction surgery, either at the same time as your mastectomy, or at a later date.

We’ll talk you through all the options available to you before your procedure, so you’re fully informed and in the best place possible to make the decision that feels right for you.

Some patients benefit from additional therapies, such as chemotherapy or hormone treatment. These are delivered in collaboration with our colleagues at Leaders in Oncology Care at 95 Harley Street.

In some cases, yes. If recommended, your radiotherapy will take place at The Harley Street Clinic, with full support from our team.

Recovery doesn’t stop at surgery. We offer a tailored wellness programme to help you regain strength, manage side effects, and transition smoothly back into your day-to-day life.

As with all surgery, a mastectomy carries some risk. It’s normal to have some pain, feel tired and emotional in the days after surgery. There may be changes in how your chest looks or feels, but we’ll support you through every stage, both physically and emotionally, with compassion and expert care.
